Bug Bites Package Design
Ever think about how the Earth is dying and any number of apocalyptic accidents could happen at any point? No? Well each of these chocolate bar flavors emphasizes a different Earth-shattering event while pairing it with a variety of bugs. The apocalypse bugs were created with linocut, then digitized and integrated into the packaging.
For this project I wanted to combine my printmaking with my digital designs. I created linocuts for each bug, and was able to scan them in and convert them to bitmaps. Once they were able to be easily edited, the project took off!

Gamma-Ray Dragonfly
Each package is a combination of a flavor, bug, and apocalyptic event that has been carefully matched and pieced together to create these packages!
The Volcanic Spice flavor is an amalgamation of ants, chai spices, and a volcanic winter. Ants are edible whether they are raw and cooked. Some countries, such as India, boil ants in spices to achieve a greater flavor, which is where the mixed spice for chai comes in. Going along with this idea of boiling, bubbling heat, it felt right to pair this bug with an apocalypse scenario caused by a volcano.
A volcanic winter is an eruption that causes too much waste (such as sulfur aerosol and volcanic ash) into the stratosphere. This can affect the climate on a global scale, as it cools the temperature to a dangerous degree.
Cybernutic is a play on the word Cybernetic, combining the nutty delicious flavor with an apocalyptic event based in the fear of a targeted technological attack. Smooth milk chocolate combines with the crunchy goodness of peanuts, pecans, hazelnuts, and beetle shells! This flavor matches with cyber attacks; the clacking of keys, the breaking of computer chips, the munch and crunch of this chocolate bar.
Most of the world today is based in technology and the internet, which puts everyone at the mercy of a cyber attack. The disruption of the internet or collapse of the economy doesn't effect the Earth directly. However, discombobulating the human race in any way does not bode well for the planet.
The flavor Jamma-Ray toys with the merging of a dragonfly, traditional jam flavors, and the event of a Gamma-Ray burst. Dragonflies are completely safe to eat, but be sure to cook them for a few seconds first! They can have a gooey, sticky texture that I thought matched the stickiness of jam. Jamma-Ray contains a mixture of berries commonly used in jams; blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
Similar to Cybernutic, Jamma-Ray is a pun to show the flavor and the apocalypse scenario it’s based off of! Gamma-Ray bursts are energetic events that occur deep in space. While most known Gamma-Ray bursts have been recorded to happen outside of the Milky Way Galaxy, a GRB that takes place within our galaxy could be devastating for the Earth.
